Hemorrhoids

What Are They?

Hemorrhoids (also known as piles, haemorrhoids or emerods) are inflammation or swelling of veins in the rectum/anus.

These swollen, inflamed veins are a bit like varicose veins.

Hemorrhoids can either be inside the anus (internal hemorrhoids or internal piles) or they can swell to the extent that they hang outside the anus (external hemorrhoids or external piles).

Causes

Hemorrhoids can be caused by lack of fiber or lack of fluid in the diet, by constipation, by straining during bowel movements, by other types of straining (eg heavy carrying or lifting), or by a sedentary lifestyle.

Treatment

Treatments include:
-- eating more fiber, cereals, wholemeal bread, fresh fruit and fresh vegetables
-- drink more fluids (for example, drink at least 6 glasses of water per day)
-- when passing a motion, keep area around rectum clean (wash with warm water, perhaps using a bidet or extendable showerhead), avoid irritation (dab area with moist towels instead of using toilet paper), and avoid staying on toilet for more than two minutes
-- have warm sitz bath after going to toilet
-- use cold compresses to the anus in order to shrink the swollen veins of the hemorrhoids
-- purchase a hemorrhoid medication from your pharmacist
-- avoid straining yourself when lifting or carrying
-- exercise more in order that your muscles are in better condition
-- for chronic or severe hemorrhoids, see your doctor
